Description and Characteristics

Agate is a variety of chalcedony. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system, is of volcanic origin, and owes its colour to the numerous inclusions that have been deposited during its formation.
Once a section of agate has been polished, we can see how it grew from the different concentric lines we find, which are the different layers of inclusions and which give it its distinct colours. Agate nodules may be hollow inside, with quartz or amethyst sometimes crystallising in the centre.
