Botswana Agate
Main Deposits
Botswana (specifically the Bobonong region), South Africa.
Description and Characteristics
Botswana agate is a specific variety of chalcedony found almost exclusively in areas of volcanic activity within the African country from which it takes its name, forming through the deposition of rhythmic layers of silica within cavities in igneous rocks. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system and is distinguished from other agates by its extraordinarily fine parallel banding, which displays a very characteristic colour palette of grey, pink, lavender and soft white tones, the result of the selective filtration of minerals over millions of years under conditions of great geological stability.
