Description and Characteristics

Amethyst has been known for thousands of years; indeed, in ancient Egypt it was used to create jewellery, personal seals and carvings. In the Middle Ages, Christianity adopted amethyst as a symbol of renunciation of worldly goods and chastity, and even today many cardinals and bishops wear it in the form of rings. Amethyst also symbolised divine wisdom.
