Description and Characteristics

Amazonite is a variety of microcline belonging to the potassium feldspar group, found mainly in pegmatites, granites and acidic igneous rocks. It belongs to the triclinic crystal system and is notable for its bluish-green or turquoise colour, which is due to the presence of small amounts of lead and water in its crystal lattice; it usually exhibits a characteristic texture of fine, interlacing white lamellae (pertites) that give it a mottled appearance highly prized in ornamentation and jewellery.

Did you know...?

Amazonite owes its striking green color to a high concentration of lead, although it has also been discovered that this may be due to the ambivalence of the Fe (iron) ion.
