Astrophyllite
Main Deposits
It is found in a few isolated and remote locations: Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada; Pikes Peak, Colorado, USA; Narsarsuk and Kangerdluarsuk, Greenland; Brevig, Norway; and the Kola Peninsula, Russia.
Description and Characteristics
Astrophyllite is a very rare hydrated potassium, iron and titanium silicate, ranging in colour from brown to golden yellow. Its name derives from the Greek words *astron*, meaning ‘star’, and *phyllon*, meaning ‘leaf’. The dark, shiny needles of astrophyllite contrast sharply with the light-coloured matrix in which the mineral is usually found. Astrophyllite is typically opaque or translucent, but can be transparent in thin specimens. The mineral is of great interest to scientists and collectors, although it is also sometimes used in jewellery, where it is cut into cabochons. Astrophyllite was first discovered in 1854 at its type locality: the island of Laven, Norway.

Due to its bladed structure and low hardness, astrophyllite is a very difficult mineral to cut; most specimens found in jewelry are protected cabochons or pieces polished within their natural matrix to prevent the "stars" from breaking off. It is often confused with Arfvedsonite, but astrophyllite is distinguished by its much more golden and coppery flashes, whereas arfvedsonite typically has bluish or silvery reflections. It is a highly prized collector's mineral because its deposits are scarce and its stellar formations are unique.
