Description and Characteristics

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of microscopic intergrowths of quartz and moganite, and is commonly found in cavities within volcanic rocks, hydrothermal veins and sedimentary deposits. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system and is distinguished by its fibrous structure and porosity, which allows it to occur in an infinite variety of colours and patterns; it differs from macrocrystalline quartz (such as amethyst) in that its crystals are so tiny that the stone appears compact and is often translucent with a characteristic waxy lustre.
