Description and Characteristics
Yellow calcite is a variety of calcium carbonate that owes its colour to the presence of traces of iron or colour centres induced by natural irradiation during its formation. It is frequently found in sedimentary deposits and cavities in limestone rocks. Like other calcites, it crystallises in the trigonal system, but usually occurs in highly transparent masses or as well-defined rhombohedral crystals with a vitreous, almost oily lustre.
