Description and Characteristics

Chalcopyrite is a copper-iron sulphide found mainly in high- and medium-temperature hydrothermal veins, metamorphic contact deposits and igneous rocks. It belongs to the tetragonal crystal system and is the world’s primary copper ore. It is distinguished by its intense brass-yellow colour which, when exposed to air, oxidises easily, creating a patina of iridescent colours (blues, purples and greens), giving it its trade name of ‘peacock’.

Did you know...?

The name derives from the Greek words ‘khalcos’ (copper) and ‘pyros’ (fire).
It differs from pyrite in that chalcopyrite is yellower and much softer (you can scratch it with a steel knife, whereas pyrite cannot). The variety sold as ‘Peacock Stone’ is usually chalcopyrite that has been treated with acids to enhance its natural iridescence.
