Smoky quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system and has a very distinctive morphology: a hexagonal prism with a pinacoid shape. Quartz is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust and is found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. In the case of smoky quartz, the colour is due to energy radiation that has turned the quartz into ‘smoky’ colours ranging from yellowish tones to black.

The name ‘smoky quartz’ comes from the fact that it appears to contain smoke within it.
In ancient Scotland, smoky quartz (known as Cairngorm) was the national stone. It was used to adorn the handles of traditional daggers (dirks) and the brooches of kilts. Like rock crystal, it is also widely used in high-end interior design, particularly in Art Deco-style lamps, due to its understated and elegant colour.
