Description and Characteristics

Danburite is a calcium boron silicate that forms primarily in contact metamorphic rocks and hydrothermal veins. Although its crystal structure is orthorhombic, its wedge-terminated prismatic crystals bear a striking visual resemblance to topaz, though they are distinguished by their cleavage and chemical composition. It was originally discovered in 1839 in Danbury, Connecticut (USA), the place from which it takes its name. It is a stone of great transparency and brilliance that, in its purest specimens, is colorless, although it can also show very subtle yellowish or pinkish tones. It is highly valued in designer jewelry and by collectors due to its excellent clarity and light dispersion.

Did you know...?

Despite its beauty and having considerable hardness for jewelry, danburite is not well known by the general public, remaining a "secret" among gemologists. Crystals from Danbury (the original deposit) are museum pieces today, as the mine was buried under the city's urban growth. A curious feature is that some danburite specimens can exhibit strong thermoluminescence, emitting a bluish light when gently heated.

New-Age Properties
