Dolomite
Main Deposits
Italy (Dolomite Alps), Spain (Cantabria and Teruel), Brazil, Mexico, United States, and China.
Description and Characteristics
Dolomite is a mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate that forms primarily in extensive sedimentary layers called "dolostones," often through the chemical alteration of pre-existing limestones in contact with magnesium-rich waters. It belongs to the trigonal crystallization system and is famous for its rhombohedron-shaped crystals, which frequently feature curved faces with a "saddle-like" appearance. It was identified as a distinct mineral by French geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu in the 18th century. It is a fundamental mineral in the geology of major mountain ranges and is distinguished from calcite by its much slower and weaker reaction to cold acids.

Did you know...?
Dolomite gave its name to an entire region of the Alps in Italy, known as "The Dolomites," which was declared a World Heritage site. A very peculiar characteristic of certain dolomite crystals is their pearly lustre, which led early collectors to call it "Spath Perlé" (pearly spar). In modern industry, besides its ornamental value, dolomite is essential for manufacturing special cements, refractories for steel furnaces, and even as a mineral supplement to correct the acidity of agricultural soils.
New-Age Properties
Dolomite is a stone of relief and balance that helps calm turbulent emotions and center energy. It is considered a stone of "generosity," encouraging a charitable attitude and alleviating feelings of loneliness or isolation. Spiritually, it helps align all chakras and stabilize the energy body, making it very useful for those who struggle to maintain consistency in their projects. Mentally, dolomite stimulates original thinking and creativity, helping to manifest ideas into physical reality. It is an excellent stone for softening the character and fostering patience and self-control.
