Sphalerite
Main Deposits
Spain (Áliva Mine in Cantabria, source of the world's finest specimens), Mexico, Peru, United States, and Bulgaria
Description and Characteristics
Sphalerite is the main ore of zinc and an iron sulfide that commonly forms in low to high-temperature hydrothermal veins, often associated with galena. It belongs to the cubic crystallization system and is celebrated among collectors for having a light dispersion (fire) three times higher than that of a diamond. Its name comes from the Greek sphaleros, meaning "deceptive," because its varied appearance caused miners to mistake it for other minerals, but when attempting to smelt it, they did not obtain the expected metal (lead or copper). Although it is too soft for everyday use in jewelry, its transparent and faceted specimens are among the most spectacular in the mineral world due to their brilliance and internal flashes.

Did you know...?
Sphalerite from the Picos de Europa in Cantabria (Spain) is world-famous for its "caramel" or "honey" color and absolute transparency, being considered the best in the world for gemstone collecting. Despite being the primary source of zinc—a metal used to galvanize steel—sphalerite is also the main source of rare elements such as cadmium, gallium, and indium, which are essential for manufacturing modern LED screens and solar panels.
