Description and Characteristics

Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl that owes its distinctive green color to the presence of trace amounts of chromium and, occasionally, vanadium. It forms primarily in granitic pegmatites or schists where beryllium comes into contact with chromium-rich rocks during metamorphic or hydrothermal processes. Unlike other gemstones, emeralds often feature visible inclusions called "jardin" (garden), which are not always considered flaws but rather proof of their natural origin and authenticity. It is one of the "big four" gemstones in the world alongside diamond, ruby, and sapphire, standing out for its unique color that remains unaffected by artificial light.

Did you know...?

The fascination with emeralds began in ancient Egypt, where "Cleopatra's Mines" supplied these gems to the Queen, who loved them for both their beauty and their supposed power of rejuvenation. A curious feature is that, due to their fragility caused by natural inclusions, a specific type of cut called the "emerald cut" (rectangular with truncated corners) was invented to protect the stone from potential impacts. Furthermore, Colombian emeralds are the only ones in the world that can exhibit a rarity called "trapiche emerald," which naturally shows a six-pointed black star of carbon.
