Description and Characteristics
Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide that forms primarily in metamorphic rocks such as marbles and in some igneous rocks. It crystallizes in the cubic system, often forming perfect octahedrons that appear to be hand-cut. Its coloration varies greatly depending on the trace elements it contains: chromium produces reds and pinks, while iron and cobalt generate blues and violets. Historically, it has been the great "imposter" of gemology, as its brilliance and color are so similar to those of ruby and sapphire that it was not recognized as a distinct mineral until the late 18th century. It is a stone of extraordinary hardness and clarity, highly valued by collectors for its high refraction and because it does not require heat treatments to display its natural beauty.

Did you know...?
The historical confusion with ruby is so famous that some of the most renowned royal jewels are, in fact, spinels. The best-known case is the "Black Prince's Ruby," a spectacular 170-carat piece that occupies the center of the British Imperial State Crown; it was discovered to be a red spinel only after the advancement of modern chemical analysis. Another famous piece is the 352-carat "Timur Ruby," also part of the British Crown Jewels. The name probably comes from the Latin spina (spine or thorn), referring to the pointed shape of its octahedral crystals.
New-Age Properties

Spiritually, spinel is said to aid in the ascension of Kundalini energy and the opening of chakras, facilitating connection with cosmic energies. Mentally, it encourages structured thinking and helps find creative solutions to persistent problems.
