Description and Characteristics
Staurolite is an aluminum and iron silicate mineral that forms primarily in medium-grade metamorphic rocks, such as schists. It is world-famous for its unique crystal habit: due to a phenomenon called "twinning," two individual crystals grow together crossing at 60° or 90° angles, forming a perfect cross. The name comes from the Greek stauros (cross) and lithos (stone). It usually appears in prismatic crystals of an opaque brown color and a somewhat rough texture. It is an index mineral in geology, meaning its presence precisely indicates the pressure and temperature conditions under which the host rock was formed.

Did you know...?
Due to its natural cross shape, for centuries it was believed that these stones were of divine or magical origin. One of the most famous legends tells that staurolites are the crystallized tears of fairies, who wept upon hearing the news of Christ's death. In the United States, several presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, carried a staurolite as a lucky charm. Currently, its cross shape makes it very popular for creating natural pendants and rustic jewelry pieces without the need for cutting.
New-Age Properties
Staurolite is a powerful stone for "grounding" and connecting with Mother Earth. It is considered a talisman for protection and good luck that helps balance the physical, emotional, and spiritual planes. It helps combat stress and addictions, especially those related to overworking or lack of rest. Spiritually, it facilitates connection with the realms of nature and elemental spirits. It is an excellent stone for those seeking to alleviate depression and anxiety, as it brings a sense of security and inner stability, allowing the person to feel "at home" anywhere in the world.
