Description and Characteristics
Fulgurite is not a mineral in the strict sense of the word (as it lacks a defined crystalline structure), but rather a mineraloid formed by a lightning strike on sand or silica-rich soil. When lightning hits the earth at temperatures exceeding 1,800°C, it instantaneously melts the sand along its path, creating hollow, rough glass tubes that mimic the shape of the lightning bolt. Its name comes from the Latin fulgur (lightning). Externally, they are usually coarse, brown or grayish, and covered with partially melted sand grains, while their interior is a smooth, shiny glass. They are the physical testimony of an extreme atmospheric event captured in time.

Due to their fragility, it is very difficult to extract a complete fulgurite from the sand without it breaking; some can reach several meters in depth, although it is common to find fragments of only a few centimeters. They are so valued by science that they are used to study past climates, as the air trapped in the glass bubbles can preserve the composition of the atmosphere from thousands of years ago. In popular culture, they gained much fame thanks to the movie Sweet Home Alabama, although in reality, fulgurites do not usually have the artistic and perfect shapes shown on screen.
