Description and Characteristics
Galena is a lead sulfide and the primary ore of this metal. It forms in a wide variety of geological environments, mainly in hydrothermal veins and metamorphic rocks, often associated with sphalerite, calcite, and quartz. It is famous for its crystallization into perfect lead-gray cubes with an extremely intense metallic lustre resembling polished steel. It belongs to the cubic system and stands out for its high density (it is very heavy for its size) and perfect cleavage, which causes it to break into smaller and smaller cubes when struck. It has been a fundamental mineral in the history of mining and metallurgy since ancient times.

Due to its semiconducting properties, galena played a crucial role in early modern technology: it was the essential component of "crystal radios" (galena radios), the first radio receivers that did not require electricity to operate. Furthermore, most galena specimens contain small amounts of silver within their structure (argentiferous galena), so historically it has also been a major source of this precious metal. As a precaution, due to its high lead content, it is recommended to wash your hands after handling it and to avoid using it for direct-contact water elixirs.
