Halite is the mineral form of sodium chloride (NaCl). It forms primarily through the evaporation of salt water in closed basins, leading to vast sedimentary deposits known as evaporites. It crystallizes in the cubic system, forming perfect cubes that often display "hopper" growths (stepped faces towards the interior). It is an essential mineral for life, soluble in water, and has a characteristic salty taste that allows for immediate identification. Although it is usually colorless or white, impurities or defects in its crystal structure can tint it with spectacular colors such as blue or pink. It is the foundation of the modern chemical industry and a critical mineral resource for humanity.

The word "salary" comes from the Latin salarium, as in ancient Rome, soldiers were partly paid their wages in halite (salt), due to its immense value for preserving food. Blue halite is one of the most sought-after rarities by collectors; its color is not due to chemical impurities, but to exposure to natural radiation that deforms its crystal lattice, creating "color centers" that trap light. In Poland, the Wieliczka salt mine is so vast that it houses an entire cathedral carved directly into the halite rock, including the chandeliers and the altar.
