Description and Characteristics
Heliotrope is a variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz) characterized by its dark green color with small spots or flecks of intense red. The green color is due to inclusions of chlorite or actinolite needles, while the red splashes are iron oxide deposits, usually hematite. It forms primarily in volcanic rock cavities or low-temperature hydrothermal veins. Although it is not a transparent stone, its ability to take a vitreous polish and its dramatic color contrast have made it a favorite gem for carving seals, intaglios, and amulets since the Roman Empire.

Its name comes from the Greek helios (sun) and trepein (to turn), due to the ancient belief that, when immersed in water, this stone could reflect the sun with a reddish hue. In medieval Christian tradition, heliotrope acquired sacred symbolism: it was said that the red spots were drops of Christ's blood that fell onto green jasper at the foot of the cross, earning it the name "Stone of Martyrs." For centuries, athletes in ancient Greece and Rome wore heliotropes as amulets to increase their physical stamina and to stop bleeding in case of injury.
