Ilvaíta
Main Deposits
Italy (Elba Island, source of the finest crystals), Greece (Serifos), Russia (Dalnegorsk), China, and Iceland
Description and Characteristics
Ilvaite is a complex calcium and iron silicate that forms primarily in metamorphic contact deposits (skarns) and in some hydrothermal veins. It is known for its elongated prismatic crystals, deeply striated longitudinally, ending in well-defined pyramidal faces. It belongs to the orthorhombic system (although a rare monoclinic variant exists) and stands out for its intense black color and absolute opacity. Its name derives from Ilva, the ancient Latin name for the island of Elba (Italy), where it was first discovered. It is a dense mineral with considerable hardness, highly valued in collecting for its sober aesthetic and architectural forms.

Did you know...?
For a long time, ilvaite crystals from Elba Island were the most sought after in the world, but in recent decades, the deposits in Dalnegorsk, Russia, have produced specimens of astonishing size and geometric perfection. A curious technical fact is that ilvaite contains iron in two different oxidation states, which makes it very interesting for crystallographic studies on electron transfer in minerals. Although it is black, under very intense light and in extremely thin sections, it can show slight translucent brown tones.
New-Age Properties
Ilvaite is considered a stone of "perseverance" and "inner strength." Its dark, dense energy makes it an excellent tool for deep grounding, helping those who feel scattered to center their will. Spiritually, it is said to help structure thought processes and materialize projects that seem stalled. It is a protective stone that aids in maintaining calm and emotional stability during periods of great physical or mental effort. Mentally, it fosters patience and a sense of duty, making it ideal for strengthening personal discipline and resilience in the face of adversity.
