Description and Characteristics
Iolite is the gem-quality variety of the magnesium aluminum silicate known as cordierite. It forms primarily in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks, such as schists and gneisses. Its name comes from the Greek ion (violet), due to its characteristic color ranging from deep blue to lavender. It is celebrated in the gemological world for its extreme pleochroism: depending on the angle from which it is viewed, the same crystal can display three different colors: violet-blue, grayish-yellow, or pale blue. This property is so marked that it allows for almost instantaneous identification against other blue gems like sapphire or tanzanite.

Did you know...?
It is historically famous as the "Viking Compass Stone." It is said that Norse navigators used thin slices of iolite as the world's first polarizing filter. Thanks to its strong pleochroism, they could look through the stone to locate the exact position of the sun on cloudy or foggy days, allowing them to navigate the North Atlantic with precision. In jewelry, although it is a beautiful gemstone, its hardness is somewhat lower than that of sapphire, so it is recommended to protect it from sharp blows to keep its brilliance intact.
New-Age Properties
Iolite is considered the "stone of vision" and the inner journey. It is strongly associated with the third eye chakra, enhancing intuition and mental clarity. It is an excellent stone for those seeking to understand their true "self" and overcome the expectations of others, fostering personal responsibility. Spiritually, it is used to facilitate creative visualization and to balance masculine and feminine energies within oneself. Emotionally, it helps calm a chaotic mind and find creative solutions to financial or organizational problems, providing a sense of self-reliance and confidence.
