Jadeite
Main Deposits
Myanmar (Burma, source of 95% of gem-quality jadeite), Guatemala, Russia, and Japan
Description and Characteristics
Jadeite is a sodium aluminum silicate belonging to the pyroxene group. It forms in metamorphic rocks under conditions of extremely high pressure but relatively low temperatures. It is an exceptionally tough mineral due to its interlocking crystal structure, making it almost impossible to break by impact. Although emerald green (caused by chromium) is the most coveted color, pure jadeite is white and can display an astonishing range of colors due to impurities. It is distinguished from nephrite (the other type of jade) by being harder, denser, and having a more crystalline and translucent structure.

Did you know...?
The most expensive variety of jadeite is called "Imperial Jade", which is a near-perfect translucent emerald green; its value per carat can rival that of the purest diamonds. In Chinese culture, jade is more valuable than gold, and there is a proverb that says: "Gold has a price, jade is priceless". Historically, the Olmec and Mayan civilizations of Mesoamerica used Guatemalan jadeite to create funerary masks and ritual objects, considering it the breath of life and the symbol of fertility and rebirth.
New-Age Properties
