Jasper
Main Deposits
India, Brazil, Madagascar, United States (Oregon and Arizona), Russia, and Egypt
Description and Characteristics
Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz) containing significant amounts of foreign materials (up to 20%), such as iron oxides, clays, or organic matter, which provide its opacity and characteristic patterns. It forms primarily in sedimentary environments or through hydrothermal processes. Unlike agate, which is translucent, jasper is always opaque. Its patterns can be striped, spotted, or circular, and each piece is practically unique. Due to its hardness and ability to take an impeccable polish, it has been used since prehistory to manufacture tools, seals, jewelry, and highly valued ornamental objects.

Did you know...?
Jasper has been a sacred stone for almost all ancient cultures. The Egyptians associated it with the blood of Isis and used it in amulets for fertility. In the Middle Ages, red jasper was believed to stop hemorrhages if applied directly to a wound. Some jaspers are so famous for their patterns that they have their own names, such as Ocean Jasper, which is only mined during low tide in Madagascar, or Mookaite Jasper from Australia, famous for its vibrant colors ranging from mustard yellow to maroon.
New-Age Properties
Jasper is known as the "supreme nurturer." It sustains and supports during times of stress, bringing tranquility and wholeness. It is used to align the chakras and facilitate shamanic journeys. Each variety has specific properties: Red Jasper is a stone of grounding and justice; Dalmatian Jasper helps break down barriers and encourages playfulness; and Picture Jasper is considered "Mother Earth" speaking to her children, helping to visualize messages within its patterns. In general, jasper imparts determination to all pursuits and provides the courage needed to face problems assertively.
