Kunzite
Main Deposits
Afghanistan (source of the finest specimens), Brazil, Madagascar, USA (California), and Pakistan
Description and Characteristics
Kunzite is the pink to violet variety of the mineral spodumene, a lithium aluminum silicate. It forms primarily in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites. It is a relatively "young" gem in terms of discovery, standing out for its prismatic crystals that often feature deep longitudinal striations. Like iolite, it possesses strong pleochroism, meaning it shows different color intensities depending on the viewing angle (most intense when looking through the crystal's vertical axis). Its transparency and pastel tones have made it a favorite for high-end jewelry and the collection of large gemstones.

Did you know...?
Its name honors George Frederick Kunz, the famous Tiffany & Co. mineralogist who first identified it in 1902. A very important characteristic for owners of this gem is that it is photosensitive: if exposed to direct sunlight for long periods, its color can fade until it becomes colorless, so it is recommended to store it in dark places or wear it mainly as "evening jewelry." In nature, kunzite often grows alongside pink tourmaline and smoky quartz, creating stunning aesthetic combinations in its Afghan deposits.
New-Age Properties
Kunzite is known as the "Stone of the Heart" and of infinite peace. It has a very high vibration that helps open the heart center and foster unconditional love. It is excellent for relieving stress, and anxiety, and for healing emotional wounds from the past, especially those related to childhood. Spiritually, it acts as a protective shield that dispels negativity and strengthens the auric field. Mentally, it facilitates introspection and helps in accepting constructive criticism. It is a stone of humility and tolerance that inspires free self-expression and service to others from a place of joy.
