Description and Characteristics

Labradorite is a mineral from the feldspar group (plagioclase) that forms primarily in basic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro. Its most distinctive and magical feature is labradorescence: an optical effect of metallic iridescence that produces flashes of blue, green, yellow, orange, and, in rare cases, violet or red. This phenomenon is not due to the mineral's actual color but to the diffraction of light within the thin layers that make up its internal structure. In its natural state, it is often a dull, grayish mineral, but when polished and oriented correctly, it reveals a universe of vibrant light that makes it one of the most desired gems for jewelry and ornamentation.

Did you know...?

An Inuit legend tells that a warrior found the Northern Lights trapped in the rocks along the Labrador coast; with his spear, he struck the stones to release the lights into the sky, but some remained trapped forever in the rocks, giving rise to labradorite. There is an extremely rare and colorful variety found in Finland called Spectrolite, which displays the entire chromatic spectrum much more intensely than common labradorite. Due to its layered structure, it is a stone sensitive to sudden temperature changes and strong chemicals.

New-Age Properties

Labradorite is known as the "Stone of Magic" and transformation. It is considered a highly mystical and protective crystal that deflects unwanted energies from the aura and forms a barrier against energy leaks. Spiritually, it helps raise consciousness and connect with universal energies, making it ideal for enhancing intuition and psychic abilities. Mentally, it calms an overactive mind and stimulates imagination, bringing new ideas and allowing one to see through illusions. It is an excellent companion during periods of change, as it imparts strength and perseverance and helps in trusting the universe.
