Magnesite
Main Deposits
China, Austria, Brazil, Spain (Navarra), United States, and Greece
Description and Characteristics
Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate that forms primarily through the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks (such as serpentine) or by precipitation in sedimentary environments. Although it can appear in very rare and prized transparent rhombohedral crystals, it is most commonly found in compact, opaque, earthy, or porcelain-like masses, with a pure white or grayish color. It is a fundamental mineral for obtaining metallic magnesium and for manufacturing refractory bricks due to its extremely high heat resistance. Like howlite, its porosity allows it to absorb dyes easily, which is why it is frequently seen dyed in the costume jewelry market.

Did you know...?
For gemstone collectors, magnesite from Brumado (Brazil) is legendary, as it produces the largest and most perfect transparent crystals in the world, which once cut look like colorless diamonds but with much greater fragility. A way to differentiate magnesite from howlite (as both are often dyed blue to imitate turquoise) is through an acid test: magnesite effervesces slightly upon contact with warm hydrochloric acid, while howlite does not react in the same way.
New-Age Properties
Magnesite is known as the "stone of deep relaxation" and meditation. It is said to have a calming effect on emotions, helping to develop patience and stress tolerance. It is linked to the third eye and crown chakras, facilitating visualization and the stimulation of creative ideas. On a physical level, it is believed to aid in the body's absorption of magnesium, relaxing muscles and relieving cramps or tension. It is a stone of unconditional self-love, promoting a positive attitude and helping to center the mind when feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities.
