Description and Characteristics

Magnetite is an iron oxide and stands out as the mineral with the strongest magnetic properties in nature. It is commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks, often as black octahedral crystals with a sub-metallic lustre. It is a dense, heavy, and opaque mineral that constitutes one of the primary ores of iron. Its most fascinating feature is its ability to attract iron objects and to be, in itself, a magnet (especially the variety known as "lodestone"). It has been fundamental in the development of the compass and, therefore, in the history of navigation and global exploration.
Chemical Formula $$Fe_2+Fe_3+_2O_4$$
LusterMetallic to sub-metallic
StreakBlack
FractureConchoidal to uneven
CleavageNone (shows octahedral parting)
Hardness5,5-6 Mohs
Crystal SystemCubic (frequently in octahedrons)

Did you know...?

Magnetite is responsible for one of the most amazing discoveries in biology: tiny magnetite crystals have been found in the brains of migratory birds, bees, and even dolphins, serving as a sort of "biological GPS" to orient themselves with the Earth's magnetic field. Furthermore, it is a key mineral in geology: because magnetite "freezes" the direction of the magnetic field when it cools in lava, scientists were able to prove the theory of continental drift and seafloor spreading by observing magnetic pole reversals in seafloor rocks.

New-Age Properties

Magnetite is the stone of "attraction" and alignment. Due to its magnetic nature, it is used to balance dual energies (masculine/feminine, positive/negative) and to align the chakras with the body's biomagnetic field. It is a deep grounding stone that connects the wearer with the Earth's energies. It is said to help attract what one desires (love, abundance, or health) and repel negative energies. On a physical level, it is frequently used in magnetic therapies to relieve muscle pain and improve blood circulation, providing a sense of vitality and structural balance.

Uses of Magnetite

Magnetite
Magnetite, especially crystallized specimens from Potosí, Bolivia, is highly prized in the collecting world due to the geometric perfection of its octahedral crystals and its intense metallic luster. In addition to its spectacular natural aesthetics, it is a fascinating mineral for its natural magnetism, making it an essential piece that combines scientific curiosity with decorative elegance.
