Opal
Main Deposits
Australia (produces 95% of the world's opal), Ethiopia, Mexico (famous for fire opal), Brazil, and Honduras
Description and Characteristics
Opal is a hydrated silica containing between 3% and 21% water. Unlike quartz, it does not have a defined crystalline structure (it is amorphous). Its magic lies in the "play of color": precious opal is composed of tiny, perfectly aligned silica spheres that diffract light, creating flashes of every imaginable color. It forms through the filtration of silica-rich water into cracks in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Due to its water content, it is a delicate gem that can crack if it dehydrates, requiring special care that other stones do not.

Did you know...?
For a long time, opal was believed to bring bad luck, a superstition that became popular in the 19th century due to a novel by Sir Walter Scott (Anne of Geierstein). However, for the Romans, it was the most valuable stone as it "enclosed the fire of the ruby, the purple of the amethyst, and the green of the emerald." A vital care tip: never clean an opal with ultrasounds or strong chemicals. If you live in a very dry climate, it is recommended to store it with a damp cotton ball or submerge it in distilled water occasionally to prevent cracking (a phenomenon called crazing).
New-Age Properties
Opal is the stone of "inspiration and creativity." It is said to be a seductive stone that intensifies emotional states and releases inhibitions. It is linked to fidelity and loyalty, but also to spontaneous passion. Spiritually, it acts as a prism that cleanses the auric field and enhances cosmic consciousness. It is a protective stone that helps one go unnoticed when necessary (the "stone of invisibility" in ancient legends). Each color has its purpose: Black Opal is excellent for facing fears, while Fire Opal awakens vital energy and sexuality.
