Description and Characteristics

Selenite is a crystallized variety of gypsum (hydrated calcium sulfate) distinguished by its transparency and pearly or silky lustre. It forms through the evaporation of saltwater in ancient lakes or caves. Its crystals are usually colorless and transparent, often appearing as thin sheets or fibrous columns. It is an extremely soft mineral, so much so that it can be easily scratched with a fingernail, giving it a unique delicacy. Its name honors the moon because of the white light reflection that travels across its surface, similar to the glow of the Earth's satellite.

Did you know...?

In the Naica Crystal Cave (Mexico), the world's largest selenite crystals have been found, reaching up to 12 meters in length. A vital care tip: selenite is water-soluble. You should never submerge it to clean it, as over time it would lose its shine or even dissolve. It is so soft that it is frequently used to carve lamps, wands, and decorative bowls that emit a soft, diffused light highly valued in therapeutic decoration.

New-Age Properties

Selenite is known as the "stone of mental clarity" and deep peace. It is one of the few minerals that has the ability to "cleanse" other crystals simply by placing them in contact with it. It is linked to the crown chakra, facilitating meditation and connection with higher spiritual planes. It is said to instill great calm and is ideal for creating an environment of protection and harmony in the home. It helps dispel mental confusion and allows one to see the full picture of situations, providing a vibration of pure light.

Uses of Selenite
