Tanzanite
Main Deposits
Exclusively in the Merelani Hills, near Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Description and Characteristics
Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral Zoisite. It is a calcium aluminum silicate that owes its extraordinary color to the presence of small amounts of vanadium. Its most astounding feature is pleochroism: a single stone can display three different colors (blue, violet, and burgundy red) depending on the viewing angle. Interestingly, most tanzanites come out of the ground with brownish tones and acquire their famous blue color after undergoing mild heat treatment that mimics the earth's natural heat.

Did you know...?
It was discovered as recently as 1967, and it was the famous Tiffany & Co. that named it after its country of origin, claiming it was the most beautiful gemstone discovered in 2,000 years. It is considered a "one-generation gemstone," as tanzanian mines are estimated to run dry within the next few decades. Due to its perfect cleavage and moderate hardness, it is a "fragile" precious gem; it should never be cleaned with ultrasounds and is recommended primarily for pendants or earrings to avoid impacts.
New-Age Properties
Tanzanite is known as the "stone of transmutation" and high connection. By linking the energies of the throat, third eye, and crown chakras, it facilitates deep communication with spiritual dimensions. It is said to help integrate the mind with the heart, allowing one to live from a compassionate truth. It is ideal for periods of profound change, as it helps dissipate old patterns and manifest the soul's desires. Emotionally, it brings calm and helps overcome anxiety or depression crises.
